One time reunion of Graze at Hilversum Alive
Last weekend was the 12th edition of Hilversum Alive. Compared to the past year's editions, the band listing is quite thin. The one time reunion of Graze, however, is a good reason to still go to Hilversum. Hilversum Alive always takes place in the last weekend of June. During three days, downtown Hilversum is transformed into a big festival area. Various stages, a fair and on Sunday an "All American Day" with old American motorcycles and cars. As said before, the programming is this time less appealing than the past few editions. Reasons can be found in the financial crisis, economical downtimes and increased security measures. Almost every festival is hit by this nowadays. Despite this, downtown Hilversum is still packed with people. Four years ago, we witnessed two talented Dutch Rock Bands at Hilversum alive, both in the same atmosphere as the Dutch Rock chick "Anouk". These bands were Graze and Gemstone. The latter broke up only one year later. Graze did not give up that quickly. With their sucessful EP "Hesitate" the band even made to stages in the USA and UK. Changes in the band lineup, however, didn't work out for the better. Therefore, today the curtain will fall for Graze as well. Graze was started in the late nineties by drummer Nout Arends. The band grew and developed throughout the years. With bass player Chris Cavone, guitar player Albert-Jan Vink and singer Liane Hoogeveen, the right lineup was found. Later, producer Dick Kok joined as 2nd guitarist. Two years ago, things started going wrong. First guitarist Albert-Jan Vink left the band, to be followed a few months later by singer Liane Hoogeveen. She is now the vocalist in the band of blues legend Ted Oberg. The former guitarist from Livin’ Blues is present today in the audience. After departure of Albert-Jan and Liane, Graze didn't give up. A new guitarist was found in Ivar Leliveld. However, finding a vocalist to be a right match was a completely different story. Subsequently came and went: Mirjam Zippora, Vicky van Zijl and Claudia de Graaf. Each are good vocalists, but seemed not to be the right match. After a live performance of Graze in the Utrecht venue Stairway to Heaven in the fall of last year, things turned silent around the band from Hilversum. The good news reached us a few weeks ago. Graze will be recording a new EP in the old line up with Albert-Jan Vink and Liane Hoogeveen. The bad news is that this will be last act of Graze. It was decided to do one more live show with this lineup. It was initially planned to release the new EP at this gig. Unfortunately, the recordings haven't finished so we'll have to wait a bit more for the disc with new material. The last show takes place today on the large stage of "De Doelen" on Market Square, where the band had played before during Hilversum Alive and Hilversum On Air festivals. It's early in the afternoon when the goodbye show starts. It's still a bit quiet on the Market Square, but when Graze starts playing it gets busier quickly. Nevertheless, everone stays at a safe distance from the stage on the large square. The band shows they're evidently having a good time. Graze opens with "Halleluyah" and "Hesitation". Both songs are from the EP "Hesitate". The other two tracks from this EP are played at the end of the set. Also tracks come by from the demo EP from 2006: "My Plate", "Appreciated" and "Never doubt". We also hear more recent tracks, such as "You Say" and "A little too late", which will appear on the to be released EP. Today Graze ends her (live) career with a terrific performance. We could one more time see the band in with its best lineup. It was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, it was also the very last time. What remains is the EP that will be released shortly.

Graze are a pop-rock band based in the Netherlands. While the music is primarily rock, the soulful voice of lead singer Liane Hoogeveen gives their music a whole new dimension. “Forgive Me” would be an average rock track but her voice gives it a passion that makes it work.

Luckily there is more to the band that just a strong lead singer. The compositions are put together well and take inspiration from other musical styles in a way that works, like the jazzy riff in “Hesitation”. The lyrics also have a refreshing honesty to them which comes across well with a female lead.

Graze are an exciting band with great potential, with styles harking back to big acts of the 80s and 90s like The Cure and Skunk Anansie, there is nothing else quite like them out there just now.

Graze is a hot band from the Netherlands that we decided to have back again. They are truly an exciting band you should check out. It's a pleasure getting a chance to be in contact with music lovers from around the world.

You get a chance to experience life through their eyes. I know many of you have not been to the Netherlands but if you've had a chance to experience a show in U.S. during Graze's visits here you would have been floored. Truly consistent artists. I look forward to a great deal of success with this band. We need more bands who are willing to go that extra mile to make not only good music but prove they are willing to get out of their comfort zone of their local town and hit the road and show us what their made of.

Graze-Hesitate
According to the biography, four piece Graze plays 'simply good music'. That they're quite successful at that is proven by their second EP 'Hesitate', which contains four well crafted rock songs. From all influences that are named on the web site of the band, Skunk Anansie is the most obvious, but Graze is anything but a clone. Opening song Halleluyah is not quite it, but tracks such as Hesitation and Forgive me clearly show the hit potential of the music of Graze, that sounds convincing and can be listened to seamlessly between some of the big names in music. But they could be a bit more adventurous here and there and some details could get a bit more attention. The band is working hard on gaining popularity, who knows if their break through is at hand

The band Graze "goes international" with festival performances in America and Italy. End of September, the Hilversum (NL) based pop-rock band will play at the large indie-festival: The Midpoint Music Festival, in Cincinnati, which takes place from 26 thru 29 September. At the festival, 300 bands will showcase, of which 30 are from outside the US. Graze is not the only Dutch band at this festival. We already knew that "Studmuffins" have been selected.

The show will be recorded professionally with video and audio, that is planned to be released on DVD. It is always good to hear international artists. Rarely, have I screened bands from overseas that were garbage. Graze is hot... bottomline. They should be on your top list of indie bands to check out. Liane, who's the vocalist of the band is so strong with a soulful twist in her voice. I love it. Graze definitely is on our top list for Cover Page feature".

Graze-'Hesitate'
The ep 'Hesitate' is the latest release of the Hilversum-Utrecht based band Graze. With a strong pop song such as 'Hesitation', singer Liane Hoogeveen reveals her vocal talents, complete with her own lyrics.

The song 'Question' would very well fit on an album of Anouk, with the beautiful goldbronze voice. The band sound well experienced and this EP has been put together with a lot of attention. Content and sound quality form a dynamical whole.

Graze sounds good and they draw a big crowd to their live shows. In the mean time, the band will also be crossing the ocean. They have planned a mini-tour which includes a festival performance and other gigs and that says enough about the quality that this band has to offer.
